Starting his career in fine art photography, self taught, in middle and high school, and continuing through college, he was the official photographer for the Student Union at Cornell University. He began studies as an art major at Depauw University with emphases in Photography and Ceramics. In the US Air Force (1961-1966) he continued his interests working and teaching at base photo shops in Arizona and Japan, also augmenting the AF base photography operations professionally.
He attended the California College of the Arts (1966-1969) gaining a BFA degree in Ceramics , and Mills College(1969-1971) in graduate school, completing an MFA degree in Ceramic Sculpture and Printmaking. While at Mills, he studied with Villem Kritz in fine art photography, a touchstone experience. He taught at Dominican University of California (1971-2006): Drawing, Ceramics, Etching, amd Photography.
Although he has taught other art media, he has maintained a steady flow of work in photography, and has also endeavored to incorporate use of color, texture, composition, and awareness of light developed in other media into his photography. His greatest interest has been in macro photography throughout his career from his earliest years.
